My sense of our experience together keeps pointing to something Quaker author Parker Palmer calls "the work before the work." He illustrates it using an old Taoist story called The Woodcarver, which I'm also attaching here for you. As we practice and sharpen our skills at hosting conversations that matter, the tools and techniques we use in the moment become second nature. It's the hard and important inner work of hosting ourselves well enough to arrive for the work centered and present, without the baggage that often gets in our way, that allow for truth and beauty to emerge through us. That's the intention I hold up after being with you for three days.
